The VR Experience

This virtual reality (VR) training program is designed to teach harness inspection, emphasizing its critical role in preventing workplace fatalities caused by falls. Falls account for a significant percentage of workplace deaths, second only to roadway motor vehicle incidents, making proper harness inspection skills essential.

During the training, participants begin by configuring their VR experience. They can select between solo or multiplayer modes, choose to sit or stand, and decide whether to enable a simulated fall scenario or use a crash test dummy. They also have the option to train in practice mode, where no scores are recorded, or test mode, which logs their performance to a learning management system.

The main portion of the training focuses on hands-on harness inspection within a realistic virtual environment. Trainees are provided with a virtual harness and a detailed reference manual outlining potential defects such as UV damage, broken fibers, and pulled stitching. Using a virtual magnifier, they examine the harness closely to detect faults, then determine whether the harness is safe to use or should be marked as unusable. Immediate feedback is given on both correct identifications and any missed issues, helping reinforce proper inspection techniques.

Throughout the session, simulated fall scenarios demonstrate the potential consequences of a failed inspection, providing a powerful reminder of the importance of accuracy and attention to detail. The training concludes with a results summary, reviewing each trainee’s performance and supporting the program’s goal: enabling individuals to safely practice and master life-saving harness inspection skills in a realistic, immersive VR environment.
